Component Structure
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:The react-multi-step-form project is a React application designed to guide users through a sequence of data entry steps. The architecture is centered around a primary parent component, MultiStepForm, which acts as an orchestrator, managing the application's state, navigation logic, and data validation. This parent component renders a series of child components, each representing a distinct step in the form, such as collecting personal information, address details, and payment information.
The application's entry point is src/index.js, which renders the main App component into the DOM element with the ID root in public/index.html. The App component serves as a simple wrapper that renders the MultiStepForm component, which contains the entire feature's logic and UI. This structure promotes a clean separation of concerns, with the parent handling all logic and the children focusing solely on presentation.

Overall Architecture
The component hierarchy is straightforward, with a clear parent-child relationship. The App component is the root, which in turn renders the MultiStepForm. The MultiStepForm contains all four step components and uses a CSS transform to display the active step, creating a sliding animation effect.

The diagram below illustrates the component hierarchy.
Component Summary
| Component | Description | Source File |
|---|---|---|
App | The main application component that renders the multi-step form. | src/App.js |
MultiStepForm | The core stateful component. Manages form state, step navigation, validation, and submission. | src/components/MultiStepForm.jsx |
PersonalInfo | Step 1: A stateless form for collecting the user's name, email, and phone number. | src/components/formsteps/PersonalInfo.jsx |
AddressDetails | Step 2: A stateless form for collecting the user's address, city, state, and postal code. | src/components/formsteps/AddressDetails.jsx |
PaymentInfo | Step 3: A stateless form for collecting credit card details. | src/components/formsteps/PaymentInfo.jsx |
ReviewSubmit | Step 4: A stateless component to display all entered data for review and final submission. | src/components/formsteps/ReviewSubmit.jsx |
MultiStepForm: The Orchestrator
This component is the brain of the application. It centralizes all business logic, making the child components purely presentational.

State Management
MultiStepForm uses the useState hook to manage four key pieces of state:
step: A number that tracks the current active step (from 1 to 4). Initialized to1.formData: A single object that aggregates all data from all form steps.errors: An object to store validation error messages for the form fields.loading: A boolean to indicate when the form submission is in progress, used to disable the submit button.

formData State Object
The formData object consolidates all user inputs into a single structure that is eventually persisted.
| Field | Description | Corresponding Step |
|---|---|---|
name | User's full name | 1. Personal Info |
email | User's email address | 1. Personal Info |
phoneNumber | User's 10-digit phone number | 1. Personal Info |
address | User's street address | 2. Address Details |
city | User's city | 2. Address Details |
state | User's state | 2. Address Details |
postalCode | User's 5 or 6-digit postal code | 2. Address Details |
cardNumber | User's 16-digit card number | 3. Payment Info |
expiryDateMonth | Card's expiry month (MM) | 3. Payment Info |
expiryDateYear | Card's expiry year (YYYY) | 3. Payment Info |
cvv | Card's 3-digit CVV | 3. Payment Info |

Navigation and Validation
Navigation between steps is handled by handleNext and handleBack. Before proceeding to the next step, handleNext calls validateStep to ensure the data entered in the current step is valid.
The validateStep function contains all validation logic, checking for required fields and correct formats (e.g., email format, phone number length). If validation fails, the errors state is updated, and the UI displays the corresponding error messages.

The diagram below shows the flow for step navigation.
Data Flow
The application follows React's "lifting state up" pattern. The MultiStepForm component owns the state and passes it down to its children via props. Child components receive data to display (formData, errors) and functions to call (handleChange, handleNext) when user events occur.
This one-way data flow ensures a predictable and maintainable state management architecture.
The following sequence diagram illustrates how a user's input is handled.
Form Submission and Data Persistence
The final step is handled by the handleSubmit function in MultiStepForm. When the user clicks the "SUBMIT" button in the ReviewSubmit component, this asynchronous function is triggered.
- It sets the
loadingstate totrue. - It performs a final validation check.
- If valid, it uses the
addDocfunction imported fromfirebase.jsto save the entireformDataobject to a Firestore collection namedformDetails. - Upon success or failure, it displays a toast notification to the user and sets the
loadingstate back tofalse.

Conclusion
The component structure of this project is modular and well-defined. By centralizing state and logic within the MultiStepForm orchestrator component, the application achieves a clear separation of concerns. The individual step components are simple, reusable, and focused on rendering UI, receiving all necessary data and behavior via props. This architecture, combined with a unidirectional data flow, results in a system that is easy to understand, debug, and extend.
