Build System Architecture

The build system for the AFIO font project is designed to automate the generation of a customized Iosevka font integrated with Nerd Font glyphs. It utilizes a containerized environment (Docker) to manage dependencies, ensuring consistent builds across different platforms. The architecture orchestrates several stages: font compilation via Iosevka's build tools, patching with Nerd Font icons, visual showcase generation, and automated distribution through Homebrew.

Orchestration and Containerization
The core of the build process is managed by build.sh, which leverages Docker to isolate the build environment. It handles image management, mounting necessary volumes for configuration and output, and executing the sequential build commands within the container.
Build Workflow Execution
The process follows a strict sequence:
- Environment Setup: Initializes output directories and identifies the correct Docker image (building it locally if a pre-built version is unavailable).
- Iosevka Compilation: Executes
bun run buildwithin the Iosevka directory inside the container, targeting thettfformat and using the provided build plan. - Nerd Patching: Triggers the
nerd-patcher.pyscript to inject Nerd Font glyphs into the newly compiled TTF files.
The diagram above illustrates the high-level flow from script execution to the production of final font artifacts.

Configuration Management
The project uses a TOML-based configuration system to define the visual characteristics of the font. The private-build-plans.toml file serves as the single source of truth for font families, variants, weights, and slants.
Build Plan Parameters
| Parameter | Description | Source |
|---|---|---|
family | Defines the font family name (default: "afio"). | private-build-plans.toml:2 |
spacing | Sets font spacing (e.g., "term"). | private-build-plans.toml:3 |
variants.design | Map of specific character variants (e.g., 'f', 'zero', 'nine'). | private-build-plans.toml:8-19 |
weights | Configuration for light, regular, medium, and bold weights. | private-build-plans.toml:41-60 |
widths.normal | Defines shape and menu width grades. | private-build-plans.toml:83-86 |

Glyph Injection and Patching
The patching system incorporates external Nerd Font glyphs into the custom Iosevka build. This involves a two-step process: fetching the glyph sources and applying them via a parallelized patching script.
Glyph Procurement
The nerd/download_glyphs.sh script retrieves specific font files and symbol definitions from the Nerd Fonts upstream repository, including FontAwesome, Material Design Icons, and Powerline symbols.

Parallel Patching Logic
The src/nerd-patcher.py script manages the actual injection process. To optimize performance, it uses a process pool to patch multiple weight variants simultaneously.
This diagram shows how the patching script processes the individual font weights in parallel to reduce build time.

Automated Showcase Generation
To verify build quality and provide documentation, the system includes an automated showcase generator (src/generate_showcase_matrix.py). This component renders the font in various themes (light/dark) across all configured weights.
Rendering Architecture
The generator renders SVGs which are then converted to PNGs using librsvg inside a Docker container. This ensures that the anti-aliasing and font rendering are identical regardless of the host OS where the build is triggered.
| Component | Description | Source |
|---|---|---|
WeightSpec | Dataclass storing weight name and CSS value. | src/generate_showcase_matrix.py:100-103 |
apply_theme | Injects color palette variables into SVG templates. | src/generate_showcase_matrix.py:149-152 |
render_pngs | Orchestrates a Docker container to run rsvg-convert. | src/generate_showcase_matrix.py:177-202 |

Distribution and Deployment
The final stage of the build system handles the update of distribution channels, specifically the Homebrew Tap.
Tap Update Flow
- Release Download: Fetches the latest release assets from GitHub using the
ghCLI. - Checksum Verification: Calculates the SHA256 hash of the font archive.
- Template Substitution: Updates a Ruby cask template (
homebrew/font-afio.template.rb) with the new version and checksum. - Git Deployment: Clones the tap repository, commits the updated cask, and pushes to the main branch.

Summary
The AFIO build system architecture represents a robust pipeline that transforms configuration data into a distributed software product. By combining Docker-based environment isolation, parallelized font patching, and automated visual regression testing, the system enables consistent, high-quality font builds. The integration with GitHub Actions and Homebrew completes the lifecycle from a simple TOML edit to a ready-to-install package for end users.
