Introduction
Glyph Variants and Tuning refers to the customization system used in the AFIO project to modify the visual characteristics of the Iosevka font before merging it with Nerd Font icons. Unlike standard prebuilt Nerd Fonts, this system allows for granular control over character shapes, font weights, and widths. This is achieved by defining specific design variants and metric overrides in a build plan, which are then processed through a Docker-based build pipeline.

The primary goal is to provide a highly opinionated version of Iosevka (AFIO) while offering a template for users to build their own variations. This includes specific choices for letterforms, such as flat-hooked 'f' or dotted zeros, and custom weight mappings that differ from standard Iosevka defaults.

Architecture and Build Flow
The tuning process is integrated directly into the font generation pipeline. Configurations defined in private-build-plans.toml are passed to the Iosevka build process, which generates the base TrueType (TTF) files. These files are subsequently processed by a Nerd Font patcher to add iconography.
Build Process Flow
The following diagram illustrates how configuration data flows from the build plan through the various scripts to produce the final tuned font.
The diagram shows the transition from raw configuration to final patched font assets and visual validation.

Glyph Design Variants
Design variants are specified under the [buildPlans.afio.variants.design] section. These settings override the default appearance of specific characters. AFIO uses a "term" spacing and "sans" serif configuration as its base.
Configured Glyph Variants
| Glyph | Variant Name | Visual Description |
|---|---|---|
f | flat-hook-serifless-crossbar-at-x-height | Flat hook without serifs, crossbar at x-height |
i | serifed-asymmetric | Asymmetric serifed version |
l | serifed-semi-tailed | Semi-tailed with serifs |
m | short-leg-serifless | Short-legged version without serifs |
0 | dotted | Dotted zero |
9 | open-contour | Open contour numeral nine |
* | hex-low | Hex-low style asterisk |
% | dots | Dotted percent sign |
tittle | square | Square dots over 'i' and 'j' |
@ | fourfold-solid-inner-tall | Tall inner fourfold solid 'at' symbol |

Weight and Width Tuning
The project implements custom weight mappings to ensure visual consistency. These mappings define the relationship between the internal "shape" weight (the actual thickness of the lines), the "menu" name, and the "css" weight property.
Weight Mapping Table
| Weight Name | Shape (Thickness) | Menu/CSS Value |
|---|---|---|
| Light | 200 | 300 |
| Regular | 300 | 400 |
| Medium | 400 | 500 |
| Bold | 500 | 700 |
Note: AFIO's "Bold" uses a shape weight of 500, which is lighter than the standard Iosevka bold to maintain better readability with Nerd Font icons.

Width Configuration
The glyph shape width is tuned to a specific grade to control the horizontal density of the font.
- Normal Width: Shape grade 540, Menu grade 5.

Automated Showcase Generation
To verify that glyph variants and weight tuning are applied correctly, the project includes a showcase generator. This script renders the font at different weights using a Dockerized environment to ensure consistent rendering.
Rendering Sequence
This sequence ensures that the "css" weights defined in the build plan match the visual output shown in the project documentation.

Conclusion
Glyph Variants and Tuning in AFIO provides a structured way to customize the Iosevka font. By utilizing a central private-build-plans.toml and a Docker-based build pipeline, the project ensures that specific design choices—such as square tittles or lightened bold shapes—are applied consistently across all font weights. This system bridges the gap between the high customizability of Iosevka and the practical requirement of Nerd Font icon integration.
