Forking and GitHub Actions Setup
Relevant source files

The AFIO project is designed as both a ready-to-use font and a template for creating custom Iosevka Nerd Font distributions. By forking the repository, users can leverage automated GitHub Actions to build, patch, and release their own personalized font variants without requiring local development environments.
The automation system handles the compilation of the Iosevka font from source, the injection of Nerd Font glyphs, and the generation of showcase images. Upon completion, the system automatically creates a GitHub Release containing the packaged font assets and updates relevant package managers like Homebrew.

Automation Workflow and Architecture
The project utilizes a multi-stage pipeline that transitions from configuration to font generation, patching, and finally publication. When a user pushes changes to a fork, GitHub Actions triggers a sequence that manages environment setup, font building, and distribution.
Core Pipeline Flow
The following diagram illustrates the automated transition from a code push to a finished release:
The diagram shows the sequential flow from configuration changes to the final distribution update.

Build Configuration
The primary point of interaction for forked repositories is the private-build-plans.toml file. This file defines the specific glyph variants, weights, and styles that the automated builder will produce.
| Component | Purpose | Config File |
|---|---|---|
| Iosevka Build | Defines font variants (e.g., f, i, 0) and weights | private-build-plans.toml |
| Nerd Patcher | Injects 9000+ icons into the generated TTF files | src/nerd-patcher.py |
| Showcase Gen | Creates SVG/PNG previews for the README | src/generate_showcase_matrix.py |
| Release Auth | Requires GITHUB_TOKEN for asset uploads | Internal GitHub Action |

Implementation Details
Font Compilation and Patching
The build process is encapsulated within a Docker container to ensure environment consistency. The build.sh script coordinates the execution, while src/nerd-patcher.py handles the parallel processing of font files.
def patch_fonts(index, ttf_file):
output_dir = environ.get("OUTPUT_DIR", "/output")
command = " ".join([
"python3 font-patcher -q",
"-s -l -c --careful",
"--makegroups -1",
f'-out "{output_dir}" "{ttf_file}"'
])
os.system(command)

Release and Distribution
After the fonts are built, the system automates the creation of a zip archive and updates external distribution channels.
- Archiving: The
nerd-patcher.pyscript gathers all patched.ttffiles into a versioned.ziparchive. - Homebrew Integration: The
homebrew/update-tap.shscript performs the following:- Downloads the latest release asset via
gh release download. - Computes the SHA256 checksum of the new zip file.
- Updates a Homebrew Cask template (
font-afio.template.rb). - Pushes the updated cask to a separate Homebrew tap repository.
- Downloads the latest release asset via

Local Development Alternative
While GitHub Actions is the recommended method for forks, the project supports local execution via Docker. This allows users to test their private-build-plans.toml configurations before pushing to GitHub.
# Execute local build via Docker
./build.sh
The script automatically pulls the builder image (or builds it locally if missing) and outputs the results to the _output directory.

Summary
The forking and GitHub Actions setup allows for a "no-local-setup" workflow where font customization is handled entirely through configuration files. By modifying private-build-plans.toml and utilizing the provided scripts, users can maintain their own automated font distribution pipeline, complete with documentation previews and package manager support.
