Docker Infrastructure

The Docker infrastructure in this project facilitates a consistent, platform-independent environment for building the AFIO font and generating its visual documentation. By containerizing the complex dependencies required for font compilation (Iosevka), glyph patching (Nerd Font Patcher), and image rendering (librsvg), the project ensures identical output across macOS, Linux, and Continuous Integration (CI) environments.

Font Build Pipeline
The primary build mechanism utilizes a Docker image to compile Iosevka from source and apply Nerd Font patches. The build.sh script orchestrates this process, managing image retrieval, volume mounting, and command execution.
Image Management and Build Execution
The system attempts to pull a pre-built image from the GitHub Container Registry (ghcr.io/awnion/custom-iosevka-nerd-font) based on the version specified in the VERSION file. If the remote image is unavailable, it triggers a local build using docker buildx.

Environment Configuration
The build container is executed with several critical environment variables and volume mappings:
| Variable / Mount | Path / Value | Description |
|---|---|---|
DOCKER_BUILDKIT | 1 | Enables advanced Docker build features. |
BUILD_DIR | /build | Internal container directory for source and tools. |
OUTPUT_DIR | $(pwd)/_output | Host directory where final .ttf and .zip files are stored. |
CACHE_MOUNT | /iosevka/.build | Optional mount for verda cache to speed up rebuilds. |
BUILD_PLAN | private-build-plans.toml | User-defined font configuration. |

Logic Flow
The following diagram illustrates the lifecycle of a font build initiated by build.sh.
The container executes a sequence of commands: first building the base Iosevka TTF files using bun, then invoking nerd-patcher.py to inject 9000+ icons.

Showcase Rendering Infrastructure
A separate Docker-based workflow exists within src/generate_showcase_matrix.py to render SVG templates into high-quality PNG matrices. This ensures that font rendering is consistent regardless of the host's installed libraries.
Rendering Components
- Image:
debian:trixie-slim - Tools:
librsvg2-bin(specificallyrsvg-convert),fontconfig - Data Flow:
- The script generates themed SVGs locally.
- A container is launched with mounts to the generated SVGs and the newly built font directory.
- The container installs necessary packages, updates the font cache (
fc-cache), and converts SVGs to PNGs.

Rendering Sequence
The interaction between the host script and the rendering container is detailed below:
Asset Preparation
Before the Docker build process completes, the system requires glyph sources. The nerd/download_glyphs.sh script prepares these assets, which are then utilized by the nerd-patcher.py script running within the containerized environment.
Glyph Sources
The infrastructure pulls various icon sets from the Nerd Fonts repository, including:
- FontAwesome and Devicons
- Material Design Icons
- Powerline Symbols
- Octicons and Codicons

Patching Logic
Within the container, nerd-patcher.py uses a multiprocessing.Pool (defaulting to 8 processes) to execute the font-patcher command against all generated TTF files in parallel.

Conclusion
The Docker infrastructure provides a robust and reproducible environment for the entire font development lifecycle. By isolating the specialized build tools (Bun, Iosevka, Nerd Font Patcher) and rendering engines (librsvg), the project allows users to either consume the pre-built AFIO font or build their own custom variant with minimal local configuration.
