Next.js Configuration
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:This document provides a technical overview of the Next.js configuration for the TAF-SAF project. The project is bootstrapped with create-next-app and utilizes a standard configuration structure involving multiple files that define its behavior, dependencies, and build process.
The configuration is primarily managed through package.json for dependencies and scripts, tsconfig.json for TypeScript settings, and next.config.ts for Next.js-specific options. Styling is handled globally via src/app/globals.css with Tailwind CSS, and the root application layout is defined in src/app/layout.tsx.

Core Configuration Files
The project's build and development behavior is dictated by a set of core configuration files. The diagram below illustrates how these files interact with the Next.js framework.
This diagram shows the central role of package.json, tsconfig.json, and next.config.ts in defining the Next.js build and development process, which in turn serves the application source code.
package.json
This file defines project metadata, scripts, and dependencies.
Sources: package.json
Scripts
The scripts section provides commands for common development tasks.
| Script | Command | Description |
|---|---|---|
dev | next dev --turbopack | Runs the development server with Turbopack, a high-speed bundler for faster local development. |
build | next build | Creates an optimized production build of the application. |
start | next start | Starts the production server after a build has been completed. |
lint | next lint | Runs the Next.js integrated ESLint linter to check for code quality and potential errors. |
Sources: package.json:5-9
Dependencies
The project relies on the following core libraries for its functionality.
| Package | Version | Description |
|---|---|---|
react | ^19.0.0 | A JavaScript library for building user interfaces. |
react-dom | ^19.0.0 | Serves as the entry point to the DOM and server renderers for React. |
next | 15.3.2 | The React framework for production. |
Sources: package.json:10-14
Development Dependencies
These packages are only required for local development and building the project.
| Package | Version | Description |
|---|---|---|
typescript | ^5 | A typed superset of JavaScript that compiles to plain JavaScript. |
@types/node | ^20 | TypeScript type definitions for Node.js. |
@types/react | ^19 | TypeScript type definitions for React. |
@types/react-dom | ^19 | TypeScript type definitions for React DOM. |
@tailwindcss/postcss | ^4 | A PostCSS plugin for Tailwind CSS. |
tailwindcss | ^4 | A utility-first CSS framework for rapidly building custom designs. |

next.config.ts
This file is intended for custom Next.js configuration. In its current state, it is a placeholder with no options enabled.
// next.config.ts
import type { NextConfig } from "next";
const nextConfig: NextConfig = {
/* config options here */
};
export default nextConfig;
Sources: next.config.ts:1-7
tsconfig.json
This file configures the TypeScript compiler (tsc) for the project. It defines how TypeScript files are transpiled into JavaScript.
Sources: tsconfig.json
Compiler Options
Key compiler options are set to align with Next.js requirements.
| Option | Value | Description |
|---|---|---|
target | ES2017 | Specifies the ECMAScript target version for the compiled JavaScript. |
lib | ["dom", ...] | Includes a list of library files to be included in the compilation (e.g., DOM APIs). |
jsx | preserve | Preserves JSX syntax in the output, letting Next.js's Babel transform handle it. |
module | esnext | Specifies the module code generation strategy. |
moduleResolution | bundler | Mimics how modern bundlers resolve modules. |
paths | {"@/*": ...} | Sets up a path alias, allowing for absolute imports from the src directory (e.g., import ... from '@/components'). |
plugins | [{"name": "next"}] | Integrates the Next.js compiler plugin for optimizations. |
noEmit | true | Prevents the TypeScript compiler from outputting files; Next.js handles the build process. |
Sources: tsconfig.json:2-23
File Inclusion
The configuration specifies which files to include and exclude during type-checking.
- Included:
next-env.d.ts, all*.tsand*.tsxfiles, and types generated by Next.js in.next/types/**/*.ts. - Excluded: The
node_modulesdirectory.

Layout and Styling Configuration
The application's visual presentation is managed through a combination of the root layout component, global stylesheets, and the next/font optimization system.
Root Layout (src/app/layout.tsx)
This file defines the root HTML structure for all pages in the application. It is responsible for:
- Importing global styles from
globals.css. - Setting the document's
langattribute to "en". - Configuring and applying the
GeistandGeist_Monofonts usingnext/font. The fonts are loaded and assigned to CSS variables (--font-geist-sans,--font-geist-mono). - Applying the font variables to the
<body>tag to make them available throughout the application.
// src/app/layout.tsx:2-5
import type { Metadata } from "next";
import { Geist, Geist_Mono } from "next/font/google";
import "./globals.css";
// src/app/layout.tsx:27-32
<html lang="en">
<body
className={`${geistSans.variable} ${geistMono.variable} antialiased`}
>
{children}
</body>
</html>

Global Styles (src/app/globals.css)
This stylesheet sets up the base styles for the application.
- It imports Tailwind CSS using
@import "tailwindcss";. - It defines CSS custom properties (variables) for background and foreground colors in both light and dark modes.
- It maps the font variables from
layout.tsxto theme-level variables (--font-sans,--font-mono).
The following diagram shows the flow of how fonts and styles are applied.
This flow illustrates how layout.tsx loads fonts and globals.css defines styles, which are then consumed by page components like page.tsx.

Summary
The TAF-SAF project is configured as a modern Next.js 15 application using the App Router. Its configuration is distributed across package.json for project management, tsconfig.json for robust type-safety with path aliases, and next.config.ts for future framework-specific customizations. The development process is accelerated by Turbopack. The styling architecture is built on Tailwind CSS v4, with a theming system for light/dark modes and optimized font loading via next/font, providing a solid foundation for building a scalable and performant web application.
